Student Volunteers
At GLLA we believe that volunteering is a rewarding experience for all ages and encourage our students to take part in making a difference in their local communities. Throughout the year we will use this space to promote and celebrate volunteer opportunities. If you really enjoy helping others you might consider applying to join the GLLA National Honor Society!
Share Opportunities & Stories If you have volunteer opportunities that you would like to promote to other students or stories about work that you have done that you are willing to share please let us know by reaching out to: Corrie Groth Webmail [email protected] 810-243-4577 |

Why a shoe drive?
Our school National Honor Society has selected Footprints of Michigan to benefit from their planned service project for this school year and would like YOUR help! Footprints of Michigan provides new and gently used footwear to people in need all over the state. They also have specific programs to support students (Boots on the Playground) and veterans (Soles4Vets). Our National Honor Society chapter would like to challenge YOU to help with a schoolwide shoe drive to support this cause (or encourage you to participate and donate to a local charity near you). Our goal is to collect at least 400 pairs of shoes as a school! When do I participate? You can collect shoes on your own throughout the spring. We will be hosting a field trip on Friday, May 17th in the Detroit area (information coming soon). Students can bring their shoe donations to the field trip and help sort them by size/type and box them up for pickup by Footprints of Michigan. What if I can’t attend the field trip and I still want to participate? 1. Connect with Footprints of Michigan on your own (based out of Lansing, MI) and report your contribution to us with the Shoe Drive Report Form! 2. Donate to a local location in your community (such as a church clothing drive, homeless shelter, Volunteers of America, Goodwill, etc.) and report your contribution to us with the Shoe Drive Report Form! How do I collect shoes? There are lots of ways you can collect shoes in your very own community!
Lastly, everyone should report their FINAL contributions on our Shoe Drive Report Form! Feel free to upload and share photos with us as well! What type of shoes? All types! New and gently used shoes of all types and sizes are needed.

GLLA Student Makes a Positive ImpactHow did you spend your summer? It’s a question we’re all familiar with! For Landon Davis, a freshman at Great Lakes Learning Academy, his time last summer (2023) was spent making a positive impact on the other side of the world.
Along with his dad, Landon joined a group of local volunteers as they geared up to travel to Moldova, where many Ukrainian refugees were seeking shelter from war. The relief group, organized by local church Elevate, spent 11 days assisting families crossing the border, meeting locals and working closely with them to provide much needed support. During the group’s 12-hour workdays, Landon would help by coordinating housing, dispersing food and hygiene supplies, organizing shelters and interacting with the younger refugees in the area. His enthusiasm to support was unrivaled, and although he was considerably younger than most of the members of the relief group, he was always ready to be of assistance. Great Lakes Learning Academy is proud of the incredible contributions Landon made last summer and is glad he was able to learn and experience throughout his journey. As Landon and his dad look ahead at more opportunities to support vulnerable populations around the world, we look forward to seeing his continued growth at Great Lakes Learning Academy and the great things he will accomplish in the future. |
